How many months of passport validity do you need for Italy?

To enter Italy, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you leave, and issued less than 10 years before the date you arrive.

The rule

Travel insurance

At the border you may be asked for proof of insurance.

The official source says it, word for word:

At Italian border control, you may need to: show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address for your own property show proof of your travel insurance show a return or onward ticket prove that you have enough money for your stay – the amount varies depending on your accommodation

This is here because it is part of what you are asked for at the border, like passport validity.

One option

SafetyWing Nomad Insurance covers up to US$ 250.000 in medical costs and US$ 100.000 for evacuation. Compare those figures with what the text above asks for before buying: we do not verify policy by policy whether it is enough for each country.

You will need proof of sufficient funds and a return plane ticket .

Check your own dates

The rule is one thing; whether your passport clears it on your travel dates is another. Turkey counts 150 days, not five months. Costa Rica counts one day. Schengen countries check two rules at once.

What happens if you do not meet it

Airlines check validity at check-in and can refuse to board you — they face fines of 3,500 to 10,000 US dollars for carrying a passenger who is then refused entry. One denied boarding costs the traveller between 1,200 and 2,400 US dollars in lost fares, hotels and rebooking.
